You got the expiry notice, checked the site, and it loaded fine. So the warning was a false alarm, right? Not quite. A domain that expired but is still working is not a reprieve — it is a countdown you cannot see. The site keeps loading because of caching and grace periods that are already ticking down. Here is why it still works, and exactly when it will stop.

The short answer: caching is buying you time

When a domain expires, the registration lapses — but the machinery that points visitors to your server does not switch off instantly. Two layers of caching keep the lights on for a while. DNS resolvers all over the internet have cached your domain's records and will keep serving them until those cached copies expire. And registries usually keep the domain resolving during a grace period before they actually pull it from the zone.

So 'the site still loads' is not evidence the domain is fine. It is evidence that the internet has not yet caught up to the fact that it expired. That gap can be hours or days, and it ends without warning.

How DNS caching keeps you online

Every DNS record has a TTL — a time-to-live, in seconds — that tells resolvers how long to cache it before checking again. When someone visits your site, their resolver stores your A record for that TTL, commonly anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours or more. During that window, visitors are served the cached answer without the registry being consulted at all.

This is why an expired domain can keep resolving: resolvers around the world are still handing out cached copies of your records. As each cache entry hits its TTL and is discarded, the resolver goes back to look up the record fresh — and if the domain has been pulled by then, that is when visitors start getting failures. The higher your TTL, the longer the illusion lasts.

The registrar grace and redemption periods

Most domains do not vanish the day they expire. For common TLDs like .com and .net, there is typically an auto-renew grace period of around 30 days after expiry during which you can still renew at the normal price, and the domain often keeps resolving. After that comes a redemption period of roughly 30 more days, where you can usually still recover the domain but at a steep restoration fee.

These windows vary by TLD and registrar, and some registrars park or disable the domain the moment it expires regardless of the grace period. The safe assumption is that you have less time and fewer guarantees than the theoretical maximum. Never plan around the redemption period as a buffer — the price and the risk both climb sharply, and some names get released to the public before you expect.

What breaks, and roughly when

The uneven timing is what makes this deceptive. Because caches expire at different moments in different places, the site works for you and breaks for a customer on the other side of the country at the same time — so 'it loads for me' tells you almost nothing.

  • Immediately to hours: nothing visible, thanks to DNS and registry caching — this is the dangerous 'it's fine' phase.
  • As TTLs expire: pockets of visitors start hitting DNS resolution failures as caches empty at different times worldwide.
  • Within the grace period: many registrars park the domain or serve ads instead of your site, even before full deletion.
  • Email fails alongside the web: MX records stop resolving too, so mail bounces — often the first thing a client actually notices.
  • After grace and redemption: the domain can be deleted and re-registered by anyone, which is the point of no return.

What to do right now

Renew first, diagnose later. If the domain is yours and merely expired, renewing during the grace period is cheap and instant; waiting until redemption is expensive and waiting past it can be catastrophic. Do it before you finish reading the alert.
