How to Manage Meta Ads From ChatGPT

Meta's Ads Manager is powerful and, most days, exhausting, a dozen tabs to check spend, pull a breakdown, and pause the one ad set that's eating budget. Managing Meta Ads from ChatGPT flips that around: you ask in plain English and the work happens against the real API. The piece that makes it trustworthy rather than terrifying is how the connection is built, read-first, dry-run by default, and gated on your explicit approval before anything changes.
How ChatGPT actually talks to Meta Ads
ChatGPT doesn't have native access to your ad account, and you would not want it to. The bridge is the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for connecting an AI assistant to external tools. You add an MCP connector, ChatGPT sees a defined set of actions it's allowed to call, and each action maps to a specific, audited Meta Marketing API operation. Nothing happens outside that defined surface.
The flow below is worth internalizing, because it's why this is safe: your instruction becomes a proposed tool call, the connector validates and (by default) simulates it, and only an approved call reaches Meta. ChatGPT is the interface; the connector is the guardrail.
Connect the VigilDog Ads MCP
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Connectors and add the VigilDog Ads MCP as a custom connector using its server URL. You'll be prompted to authenticate, this is a standard OAuth handoff to Meta, so you grant access to the specific ad accounts you choose and nothing else. Your credentials live in the connector's encrypted vault, not in the chat, and you can revoke access at any time from either side.
Once connected, ChatGPT gains a Meta Ads toolset. A good first move is a read-only request, "list my active Meta campaigns and their spend this week"to confirm the connection resolves to the right account before you touch anything that writes. If you already run search campaigns this way, the pattern will feel familiar; it's the same approach described in running Google Ads from Claude, applied to Meta and to ChatGPT.
What you can actually do
The useful range is wider than most people expect, and it splits cleanly into reading, planning, and changing. Reading is instant and safe. Planning lets you draft real structures without committing them. Changing is where the gates kick in.
In practice, the day-to-day requests look like plain sentences, the connector figures out the account, campaign, and ad set IDs so you don't have to.
- Read: "Which ad sets have a CPA above $40 this week?" · "Show me spend by campaign for the last 7 days." · "Which creatives are fatiguing, rising frequency, falling CTR?"
- Plan: "Draft a new conversions campaign targeting lookalikes of my purchasers, $50/day, and show me the structure before creating it."
- Change: "Pause every ad set with zero conversions and over $30 spend." · "Raise the daily budget on the top-ROAS campaign by 20%." · "Duplicate this ad set into a new audience."
The guardrails that make this safe
Two mechanisms keep an AI-driven workflow from becoming an AI-driven incident. The first is dry-run by default: when you ask for a change, the connector returns a preview of exactly what would happen, which campaign, which ad set, the before and after values, without executing it. You see the blast radius before anything moves.
The second is the approval gate. A write only executes after you explicitly confirm the previewed action, and the confirmation is tied to that specific proposal, so ChatGPT can't quietly expand the scope between preview and execution. Bulk changes are enumerated item by item, not hand-waved as "pause the bad ones." This is deliberate: the assistant proposes, you dispose, and every executed change is traceable back to an approval you gave.
The net effect is that you get the speed of natural language with the accountability of a change log. You're never one ambiguous sentence away from pausing a live campaign by accident.
Getting started
If you run Meta Ads day to day, and especially if you run them across multiple client accounts, driving them from ChatGPT collapses a lot of tab-switching into a conversation, without giving up control. Start read-only, get comfortable with the previews, then let it handle the repetitive budget and pausing chores.
The same Ads MCP also connects Google and LinkedIn, so one connector covers your whole paid stack from ChatGPT or Claude. See what's included to get set up.
